Easy Asymmetrical Hem

I have Peggy Sagers to thank for this very easy update. In a broadcast for last fall fashions:

Peggy gave easy detailed instructions to create this hem shaping

View my schematic with a grain of salt because the actual top is slightly different.

Day before Chemo and I’m already wired to plug in

For starters, South Dakota is about the launch into summer so I made a sleeveless top using an ITY knit in brilliant warm colors.  I started with Silhouette Patterns 195 which is my knit base. I’m happy with the sleeve hole whether I’m adding sleeves or going sleeveless as in this version. I made no fitting effort but started immediately by drafting out the 9×9″ square to be added at the side seams.

Honest, it’s just a 9″ square that is taped to the side seams. Fabric is cut as usual, I cut single layer because of the stripes, but at 9″ from the hem you turn 90 degrees and cut around the added square.  Sewing is typical except on the sides. On the sides I stitched from armscye to the square; turned 90 deg and stitched to the end of the first side of the square. Very important to stop at the end of the first side of the square. I didn’t and had a very different hem which I promptly ripped out.  I thought hemming would be difficult but it was easy. I folded the edge under and coverstitched. Kept going until I met the first cover stitch hemming.

On me, front view (way above) doesn’t show the uniqueness of this design. Back view is not the most exciting. I probably should have straightened the hem a little because of the stripes. Also I’m needed to make asymmetrical adjustment on the right shoulder deeper.  See how the fabric pools on the right but not the back?   Side view shows the variation quite well.  I think I might have liked it even better had I used a fabric that was the same on both sides.  As I did it, you can see the and know you are seeing the wrong side at those points.

Will I make this again?  Yes just not right away.  I like varying my basic patterns. It makes for quick satisfying projects.  I think I might make the square smaller. I don’t like how it really frames the shape of my rear, so certainly the square I add will not be more than 9″.  Also it occured to me how easy this would be to make into a handkerchief hem, a feminine style I really do love.
